To Those Who Say Anything Is Possible

…particularly Michael Moore, who said:

An African American has been elected President of the United States! Anything is possible! We can wrestle our economy out of the hands of the reckless rich and return it to the people. Anything is possible! Every citizen can be guaranteed health care. Anything is possible! We can stop melting the polar ice caps. Anything is possible! Those who have committed war crimes will be brought to justice. Anything is possible.

Michael, I’ll tell you when absolutely anything is possible: when we elect an atheist for president. When that happens, I’ll certainly believe that anything is possible.

Yes, voting in a black man is an important step forward for this country, but it doesn’t smash all the barriers of prejudice in this country. Voting in a “godless” person will be a much harder task to accomplish than it was to elect a black man, simply because discrimination based on religion is in vogue, while racism is unacceptable in our society.

  1. Beautiful.

It is a new day rising, and it will include a new emphasis on the Arts:

    We did it.

    Yes we did.

  2. And a gay person Leap…do not forget that….in a committed relationship as it looks like marriage is out again. You took the words out of CJ and my mouths and we have a lot of words on this topic.

But the hope is there….nobody would have thought this forty years ago….so there is the hope.

We had an atheist as Prime Minister in the 80’s…Bob Hawke…maybe it is harder now with worldwide fundamentalism having made a real comeback since then. He was also the son of a Christian minister and I believe that the idea of service was instilled into him even though he did not develop into a religious person.

He is a fascinating person and when I was an air hostess in the 70’s I met him and his entourage at the hotel where we were overnighting. It was an eye opener as he was then head of the Trade Union movement in Australia …and it was an obvious progression for him into politics as he was so influential in the union movement as a strike buster among other things.

My father would not allow his name mentioned in our family home….it was like talking about the anti christ or devil…or would they be the same thing?

I had read that article over at Will’s. I got all inspired and hopeful only to come here and have it dashed.

Hmmm…kind of reminds me of life. Sure, anything is possible that doesn’t mean it will happen though.

  4. One step at a time, one step at a time.

  5. Magik: Touché. So, we need a gay atheist in the highest office in the land for everything to be truly possible.

bead: That’s my job. Anything is theoretically possible, though the percentage chance of it happening can be infinitesimally small.

Will: Yeah, but perhaps Mr. Moore should take it one step at a time, though his lack of restraint and use of bombastically wrong hyperbole is expected from him.
